Jon Carlson Feeds the Soul of the Cities

Jon Carlson’s OZ was a theatrical wonder and a word-foodie’s meal, which any epicure would envy. From him, 99% of Minnesota poets could learn how to present their words. His combination of storytelling, poetry, and theater showed us what is missing in today’s image-obsessed, word-conflicted culture. Carlson’s beautiful and poignant words poured out his intuitively gifted soul with color, precision, and illumination, like sunlight through a stained-glass wall reflecting off a babbling brook. But this was no babble. By experiencing his workday as a railroad conductor with him, we smelled the rails’ iron, touched dark smoke, saw futility in a homeless boxer, sniffed a carload of plastic beads, and melted into Carlson’s empathetic heart. And he referenced Melville, Shakespeare, and Whitman. His physical presence, his brilliant voice, and his short, musical tidbits provided The American School of Storytelling audience an example of true American art. I couldn’t ask for more.
