The Read Deal
Tyler West is simply the real deal. A real performer. That's not the case for everyone who goes on stage. He is intensely versatile - able to do everything from (good) Shakespeare to burlesque to mime to magic. The show set out to do something rather difficult. A solo show in 2026 about the performer's own life risks being clichéd, no matter what you've lived but especially if the theme is identity or trauma. West and DeOrio, the director, seem aware of this and both did what was expected of such a show but never lost touch with the fact that, after all, this is theatre and the playfulness is the point. The "Do I contradict myself?" Whitman quote at the end brought it all together. None of the ideas of the show would have worked if West was not simply a good performer, though. That's what a good solo show is supposed to be built on, anyway.
