Show: So You Want to Date a Bisexual?

A great date night
I just want to preface this by saying that improv sketch comedy really is not my thing. That being said, this was a very enjoyable show and I'm glad I rolled the dice on it. It's such a unique setup that feels distinctly Fringe-y, and the way the actors told a complete story based on the surface-level information gleaned from the "first date" felt expertly crafted. Shout-out to Lily who gave me solid Rachel Dratch energy.

A solid adaptation with a shadow puppet twist
I just want to preface this by saying that classic thriller really is not my thing. That being said, this is a competent adaptation of the classic Fritz Lang film, elevated by its use of shadow puppetry and general ragtag sense of storytelling, feeling like a love letter to old cinema and the parlor tricks used to bring these stories to life before the advent of CG. Capped off by a delightfully haunting performance by Timothy Snyder as Beckert, this is another solid outing by World Crime League.

Da na na na na na na na na SHAKESPEARE
I just want to preface this by saying that Shakespeare really is not my thing. That being said, you know how when you’ll see Shakespeare people will say “I didn’t understand what they were saying, but I understood the meaning because of the acting/context/etc.”? That’s how I felt with this show - a lovely marriage between Shakespeare and the iconic Batman cast of characters. Being able to pelt the performers with crumpled up paper balls (sorry, “super fun balls”) was an amusing addition and made for several fun improv moments. Also, I liked when Gordon said “forsooth.” Definitely recommended if you’re a fan of the Caped Crusader, though if you’re expecting something more on the Shakespearean end of the spectrum, I would probably check your expectations.

I just want to preface this by saying that interpretive dance really is not my thing. That being said, this was a very engaging piece. The energy the two performers bring are infectious, with amazing technical skill and a fun parade of surprising costume changes. My only meaningful critique is I felt the occasional voice-over was a bit hard to understand - it was kind of going for a sultry ASMR vibe, so it may have been intentional, but still, I couldn’t help but feel I was missing something. Great show, one of my Fringe surprises this year!

Just incredible
alleged theatre company has been one of my must-see companies every Fringe, and this show was no exception. The best comedies always have an undercurrent of commentary, with this show demanding that ATTENTION MUST BE PAID!!! in the most over-the-top and desperate ways imaginable. Very engaging performances from the cast - special mention to Steph Callaghan who killed it as the unexpectedly incredible auctioneer from Baltimore (where she’s from). Tennessee Williams would be proud.

C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, let's go on a road trip
This was a cozy love story couched in a political satire with about as much subtlety as an afterschool special - although this didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, given how brazenly corrupt the American health insurance industry is (how *can* you be nuanced?). All the same, I had a pleasant time. As sweet as the romance is, the music is what elevates this piece to being something worthwhile. It felt like a cozy blanket on a cold winter's night, except when it was accompanying a surprisingly engaging MAGA-themed burlesque performance. The performances were charming and I thought utilized the space well. This didn't factor into my star rating, but I do want to address the potential use of generative AI in creating some of this show's assets, including its show image and in-story mural design. If that is the case, I'm quite disappointed in the show for going that route, especially given its subject matter and message. I hope the creative team will take this point to heart and not rely on AI in the future if they did here.
