Masterclass in Loving The Idea
Something I really love about Fringe is the opportunity it presents for smaller companies to challenge the common standard of quality set by institutional theatre. Melancholics Anonymous have, with this wonderful work, set forth the challenge to LOVE the idea, love the doing of the thing, and everyone should heed the call. Watership Down is SO MUCH FUN! A serious and ambitious undertaking of literary adaptation with clear, inventive, expert execution, thematic devising upon the ethic of collective folk identity in both style and substance; ALL of it works! But above all the obviously excellent craft, I find myself walking away primarily grateful to this company for letting me in on just how much THEY have delighted in making and doing this so well. It was SO evident, the sincere, vulnerable enthusiasm for challenging themselves to make and honor a Really Good Idea. Like, THAT is what’s clearly driving the creative instinct here: the purity and authenticity of exactly what kind of ride these artists wanted to go on. Melancholics have followed the white rabbit of their idea so closely, but never at the expense of the deliciously freely shared experience of the wonderland that rabbit leads to! Cheers to you for leading us down the garden path, 100% rabbit acheived!

Come and See
Be not afraid is eminently triumphant as a piece of outstanding formal expressionist theatre. I have long loved this company for being one of the only gigs in town that is so doggedly interested in using ENSEMBLE as INSTALLATION. People are pictures and pictures are People! This piece plumbs a thematic well of gothic black gold, written with dexterous language that climbs and descends down the ladder of celestial lyric and confrontationally immediate prose. Church and Sorini are two of the most unique voices in our community with a real knack for original literary-object-device (LOVE the angel meta-theme) and it’s such a pleasure to see their eerie script brought to life by such a tight and faithful ensemble, yet again. I’m always along for the ride wherever this company’s vision takes them, and The Southern is the perfect stage to stretch this ambitious nightmare out (which they do with rare technique). Looks beautiful, gets under the skin and stays. Love you, TST!
