Duct Tape Surfboard (I cried also)
This show spends way way less time being funny than I anticipated, but oh my goodness every time the performer did something funny it really worked, the bits just happened less frequently than I expected. There are two in particular that happened towards the end (one about a character from Chowder and the other involving audience interaction) that I think are some of my favorite bits I’ve seen on stage in a while. I laughed so loud people were kinda looking at me weird. It’s clear he’s a very talented comedian, but the emotional core of the performance was what really made it great. He’s also a very talented performer, and the character felt very well rendered. Lowkey, i think the ending was kinda genius, but it might not read as clear if you haven’t seen a bunch of bad superhero movies, but I liked it a lot. My only notes are that the middle kinda dragged, and I thought some of the very early comedy could’ve been extended to make the emotional turn hit harder. So good, so funny.

Really interesting stuff
The parts of this show that worked for me really really worked. There are some really interesting technical elements that added a lot to the atmosphere and emotional impact of the show. At certain points the show became largely wordless and used a combination of movement, lighting, projection, and live music to tell its story, and I think I could’ve sat and watched those scene for hours. The stage is relatively bare, and I know budgets for these tend to be small, so the fact that practically all of the technical elements were so high quality was kind of amazing to me. I think the show struggled the most when it was using Ibsen’s script, which I do like on its own, but the performers were not always nailing their lines, and the overall message of the show felt kind of muddied by the script. Like it wasn’t necessarily hard to follow, but the choice didn’t quite click for me. Nonetheless I thought this show was really interesting and particularly beautiful, and I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for something kind of weird and different with a strong social message.
