Show: Who Am I, Again?

Engaging, insightful, and important
"Who Am I, Anyway?" is an illuminating story of one man's struggle to reintroduce himself to his brain, that's, very suddenly, very different. He also shares others' stories too, so the audience gets a broader view of how disparate injuries, healing, and individuals can be. In a show that easily could have become morose and self-indulgent, instead there is openness and even humor. Without having to actually compare experiences, this show may allow us all to find some reassurance and acceptance with our ever-changing selves. I came away pondering new ways to relate to my own aging and neurodivergent, albeit non-injured, brain.

Strong in every way
This production is proof that a strong directorial concept can make the difference between a good production and an excellent production. The ensemble was fantastic. The actors had intention and energy and focus. The venue was perfect. The costuming, set design, lights and sound worked together seamlessly. The adaptation was good. But the direction was just gorgeous.

So brilliant that I'm jealous
I love Ibsen's "A Doll House" (new accepted translation of the title), and have studied it in some depth, so I was excited to see whatever the hell this was. As soon as Torvald said his first line, I totally got the concept and got jealous that I hadn't thought of it. Then I quietly prayed, "Please don't fizzle out, please don't disappoint." It didn't. I don't give standing ovations, but I leapt to my feet as soon as possible. It's a brilliant, beautiful concept, and executed with precision. The dolls. The mannequin. The door. The projections. There are so many laughs on the way to the gut-punch of the new ending. Awaiting "the door slam heard 'round the world" sustains the suspense. God, this is a smart show.
