Beautiful storytelling and a delightful show.

I went in expecting this show to be mostly a comedy, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised with how much I found myself also getting emotional at multiple points. I related and connected to this story in so many ways and it was very well written and performed. If you have the chance, I encourage all to see Betsy Show!

Unpacking 'The Betsy Show': Trauma & Implications

While 'The Betsy Show' delved delightfully into the complexities of trauma and alcoholism, there was a part of the performance that deeply unsettled me as a disabled individual. Betsy recounted her interaction with a woman named Margot, and Betsy's trauma stemming from this encounter is undoubtedly valid. However, the description of Margot was dehumanizing. It's understandable that 'The Betsy Show' aimed to convey Betsy's perspective and the emotions tied to her traumatic encounter, but the focus on Margot's bodily functions and her limited ability to communicate were recognizably ableist and jarring for this audience member. In narratives like Betsy’s, the way marginalized individuals are presented can unintentionally perpetuate stigmatization. The offense of this portion of Betsy’s story emphasized the importance of responsible storytelling, even within the context of personal traumas. However, amidst this critique, it's important to acknowledge the show's potential. Betsy is a joy to watch with a fantastic story to tell. A final thought: The use of coasters as a symbolic representation, placed on tables filled with postcards, was indeed a brilliant touch – a subtle yet poignant nod to the theme of alcoholism.

A tightly-knitted, well-crafted performance!

It was a wonderful way to spend the day. I really enjoyed the honesty, humor and incredible talent of the actress, Elizabeth Young-Col!ins. I left the theater with joy in my heart . A must-see performance!!!

Heaven to Betsy

"The Betsy Show" is a strong example of autobiographical writing. The information provided within this one woman show is extensive and at times becomes unclear as the performer, Elizabeth Young-Collins tries to share it. I am interested in seeing how this show will evolve if Young-Collins continues to evolve this piece. One of the highlights of Fringe is experiencing some works in their infancy that are still finding their form.

Don’t ever slam the door on forgiveness

“Man is born broken. He lives by mending. The grace of God is glue.” I thought of those lines by playwright Eugene O’Neill after seeing this show. Betsy’s family provided her with incredible opportunities, but she had to steer through a sloshy sea of an increasingly drunken father and mother. Blessed are those who don’t slam the door on forgiveness — and this humorous and vulnerable play shows that Betsy has chosen the wiser path.

Smart and pretty

This show was so fun. The mix of music and snippets of scenes and Betsy’s voice literally and figuratively worked so well together! I loved the use of props and scarves. There were a lot of really poignant moments intertwined with fun and honest memories! I was very happy to see it!

Powerful and heartfelt

I really enjoyed The Betsy Show. This one woman is an intimate look at Betsy's life- and how it was shaped by her spirit and impacted by her alcoholic parents. I felt really connected to the hope, disappointment, despair and delight in this story! Go see it!

The time went by so fast, I wanted to see more!

It was a great experience, makes me want to go to the theater again and again! The lead was very good! Well written, charmingly performed! Nicely staged! Very entertaining!
