Francis Grey and the Case of His Dead Boyfriend: a One-Man Whodunnit

A wonderful serendipity!

There is nothing better than walking into a Fringe show that you pick because it is 'convenient,' and ending up seeing one of what will probably become a Fringe highlight of 2024! We don't love broad comedy, and Francis Grey is just the opposite = clever comedy. And the mystery is engaging, taking unexpected turns at every corner. The combination of video and live acting was a fabulous method to deliver a one-person play. And, with all those high spots, it was the acting that was phenomenal: facial expressions, accents, mannerisms did a great job of keeping the many characters straight. [Oh, and did I mention the humor!!]

"Francis Grey and the Case of His Dead Boyfriend: a One-Man Whodunnit" is an absolute gem of a performance that left me thoroughly impressed. The one-man show by Nathan Tylutki was an incredible display of talent that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Tylutkis's ability to portray multiple characters and maintain the intrigue of the plot all on his own was nothing short of mesmerizing. The storyline itself was a masterclass in suspense and mystery, keeping me guessing until the very end. Tyluktki's intricate weaving of the narrative, the clues, and the revelations was a testament to his skill as a storyteller. It was as if I were part of the investigation, trying to piece together the mystery alongside the protagonist. Overall, "Francis Grey and the Case of His Dead Boyfriend" was an amazing theatrical experience that I would highly recommend to anyone seeking top-notch storytelling and riveting entertainment. Additionally, the production team has incredible merch for sale. Scoop it up before the limited quantity is sold out!

What a ride!!

I’m still smiling and laughing about this gem of a production. This show is clever on every front, from the storytelling, to the characterizations, to the use of projections, to the impeccable timing and pacing! Nathan Tylutki delivers delightful and hilarious performances that win over the audience quickly and has us rooting for him and for the protagonist and for theater in general as it crescendos into joyous mayhem! What a treat!

Creative way to do a one-person show

The precision timing of a performer interacting with themself via video had to take some work to figure out, but the results were so worth it. Fun whodunnit with multiple colorful characters. My one quibble was that some of the dialogue went by pretty fast so it could be hard to keep the story straight, but that also may have been because I was laughing so much. Well done!

A whodunit with a fabulously frenzied climax!

What starts out as a seemingly straightforward whodunit procedural (well, maybe not so straightforward given that the show opens with a Jennifer Coolidge-hosted podcast) ramps and amps up as the show progresses into its fabulously frenzied climax. Tylutki amazes with his timing, as he skillfully weaves together live dialogue with video performance. And the whodunit frame allows him to slip into multiple memorable characters and show of his mastery of a range of disparate personas and dialects (it's easy to see why there's a dialect coach as one of the crew on this piece). The mom and dad of Francis's boyfriend were highlights for me -- they're projected onto a large screen and I found myself sometimes just obsessed with watching their hilarious expressions as the characters on the stage are talking. Without giving too much away, the end will have you laughing and cheering as Tylutki deftly navigates rapid fire dialogue among all 7 of the characters as the plot takes a crazy twist or two (or three!). Hang on and enjoy the ride!
