Company: Rebecca Wickert
Show: Seance Sisters
Venue: Strike Theater

Sisters Who Seance Together, Stick Together

There is nothing mid about these mediums. Three sisters war with one another and the spirits themselves in an artfully produced dramedy with more than a few surprises. In many ways it's almost a magic show, but the true sorcery is the depth of the relationships onstage. Playwright Marguerite Arbogast has built an ookie spookie layered world and director Rebecca Wickert expertly invites audiences inside to play and explore between genuine "ooo's," "ahh's," and gasps! I'm particuarly impressed by the use of practical lighting and well utilized special effects, and am still chilled 48-hours later by the truly visceral sensory experience of the Spirit Box. Absolute nightmare fuel. This is a thrilling, visually striking show that you won't want to miss!

Company: Transatlantic Love Affair
Show: 5 x 5
Venue: Open Eye Theatre

Absolutely Sensational

This may be one of the most gorgeous shows I’ve seen ever, let alone at fringe. Every story is told via an inspired physical poetry that is an absolute delight to watch and supported by an incredible soundscape that enhances each one beautifully. 5 x 5 is a masterclass in theater-making and storytelling and an absolute gift to watch

Company: Jackdonkey Productions
Show: The Dumb Waiter
Venue: Open Eye Theatre

Vibrant, Quiet, Gripping!!!

Jackdonkey always takes big swings, and this play is no exception. It’s a challenging, riveting surrealist takedown of exploitative capitalism that is brought to life with a remarkably strong aesthetic. The performances are each physically bold and dynamic, directed into a remarkably rich world brought to life with just two stools. It’s a stark minimalism that allows each actor to shine and the aesthetic to breathe gorgeously into the infamous Pinter-pauses. Strap in for a funny, beautiful, poignant and delightfully red world that will leave you with plenty to ponder after you leave the theater.

Company: Theatre On The Rocks
Show: A Horse Walks Out Onto the Stage and Dies
Venue: Phoenix Theater

If Ryan Reynolds was a Horse

One of the funniest scripts I've seen in a long time- like if the writers of the Deadpool movies wrote a philosophy textbook. Sam Sweere is incredibly funny in the title role, elevating the humor and inviting the audience into some delightfully spicy jokes. The ensemble is quick and smart in a number of very funny and occasionally adorable side characters. All of it works together in a hysterical, intelligent, and uniquely poignant show that makes me incredibly excited to see more from these very talented artists. Run, don't walk, maybe clomp

Company: W.A.S. Productions
Show: A Number
Venue: Phoenix Theater

Brilliant brilliant brilliant

It takes a great team to live up to an already incredible script, and this group knocked it out of the park and more. Absolutely gripping performances with expertly tuned pacing had the whole audience on the edge of their seat, fully invested in the story. Caryl would be proud of this incredibly well done production Encore, encore, encore!
