Sisters Who Seance Together, Stick Together

There is nothing mid about these mediums. Three sisters war with one another and the spirits themselves in an artfully produced dramedy with more than a few surprises. In many ways it's almost a magic show, but the true sorcery is the depth of the relationships onstage. Playwright Marguerite Arbogast has built an ookie spookie layered world and director Rebecca Wickert expertly invites audiences inside to play and explore between genuine "ooo's," "ahh's," and gasps! I'm particuarly impressed by the use of practical lighting and well utilized special effects, and am still chilled 48-hours later by the truly visceral sensory experience of the Spirit Box. Absolute nightmare fuel. This is a thrilling, visually striking show that you won't want to miss!

A Must See-ance

This was really great. It gave me a real sense of the spiritualist movement, both as to how it was performed, its emotional attraction, and its history. Plus the acting, costumes, and props were great.

ALL THE KITTIES

This show is interactive, spooky, comedic, and just really cool. There are somethings that they did they I really just have no idea how they did. I also just never knew what was going to happen and the story was so highly engaging. So many great moments.

Spooky fun!

This is a fun story with three very dynamic actors, and a bit of spooky stage magic too!

Could have been...

The actors are the best part of this show, 5/5 for them. Very moving and inhabit their parts beautifully. Costumes and set are also spot on. The stage magic is very cool and I was swept up in how they hid the mechanics perfectly. The script is DENSE and forces the actors to maintain an intensity throughout most of the show that makes it very one note. Rather than one or two central conflicts, there are about five. The shift from one to the next is jarring. It really is a lovely show, and stick around if you are in the area.

It was cooooooooool!

I love a show within a show! I got to go onstage! Thank you for introducing me to this story. All three actors were incredibly talented in their role. My only tiny note was that some of the scenes near the end could’ve been tightened up, I felt the point was made several times over.

Great Show, Bad Seats

I absolutely love this show! The best way I can describe it is it's like the Haunted Mansion at the Walt Disney Parks. Where it has this wonderful balance of silly fun, but that doesn't diminish its spooky and even sometimes scary moments. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 Kitties is because I felt like I had a bad spot in the house, and I felt like I missed out on wonderful things happening on stage. I would recommend getting as close to the front as possible, but more importantly, I would get as close to the center near the aisle so you don't share my fate and can enjoy this show to its fullest!

Come for the seance, stay for the acting

There are lots of ways to tell the story of the Fox sisters, and this one I found especially satisfying. I was mesmerized by the emotional depth of the actors. As someone who grew up in a large family with often difficult relationships, the action of the play spoke through to me. This is on top of a Wikipedia article. The soundtrack was layered and sophisticated and worked. Thee actors hit every cue spot on. This is a smart, ambitious show that succeeds on every level. It's a must see.

Check This Out If It Is Convenient

The show was alright. The music was set way too loud (hopefully, they have been able to correct this). The characters are written and performed as one-note overall. The magic tricks are interesting, but not fantastic. It could have been better, but worth your time if you are looking for something to fill your time slot in between shows.

Must see for Minne Fringe!

Instantly transported to a seance in the 19th century.. and then it goes a bit awry! Thoroughly enjoyed the trickery, spookiness, the brilliant acting, and the audience involvement. The intensity of the last 10 minutes made the audience hesitant to applaud in case there were any additional twists planned for us! This was a Best in Fest at KC Fringe, and this is definitely a must see for Minne Fringe!

Fun Atmosphere

I liked the spooky tone of the play and thought the acting was really well done. Sometimes a bit too much going on for me personally, but I enjoyed it.

The total package

This is a beautiful production with great acting, props, and magic! The script is the thing that fell short for me, but the story of the Fox Sisters is inherently fascinating and I love magic, so I was very happy to see this.

So spooky and thrilling!

I had to see this show TWICE because of how much I enjoyed it. Fantastic writing and performances, and I absolutely love all the stage craft and magic tricks used throughout the show. The cast has such incredible chemistry with one another and I'm truly in awe of their individual moments as well. It's eerie and scary and so heartbreaking all at once, I cannot recommend this show enough!

I can see why it's a touring show!

Seance Sisters is captivating and astonishing. Great acting and positive energy. Paranormal/magical phenomena, immersive audience participation, and convincing performances at the boundary of reality and the supernatural. What I liked most is that the play, at its core, is about the relationships among the sisters and their own journey from deception to reality. One of the very best fringe shows I’ve seen – you’ll for sure enjoy it.

A hauntingly good time!

An engaging dive into the world of Victorian spiritualism blending historical intrigue with theatrical flair! This show did an amazing job of balancing skepticism and belief with strong direction, compelling script, and wonderful performances!!

Perfect show for the Fringe Festival

What a wonderful show! This is perfect for the fringe. Great acting and writing, a historical context that teaches important lessons about human gullibility and what desperate people can be driven to for money and survival. Plus some fun magic tricks and illusions. And let me add that the Strike theater was the perfect venue for this type of play. This one is on my must see list. Well done!

Gothic & Fierce

These sisters are veritable powerhouses of raw emotion and dedication to their mystic, yet humanistic arts.

Trifecta Show at KC, MN, and INDY fringes!

What I loved best: the spooky makeup of the oldest sister, the changing relationships between the three Fox sisters, the wonderful wardrobe dresses of all, simple but delightful and used set and props, incorporation of sound cues, invitation for audience participation, the range of emotions felt by characters and audience, uncertainty of what was real and what was not, and the finale. What was missing: the historical contents of Spiritualism, which grew out of the end of the Civil War, when so many people were seeking contact with their deceased loved ones and women were filling that void. Spiritualism continues through today.

Couldn't connect

This show had great acting, pretty props, and lovely costumes. However, the script was discombobulated and contradicted itself. The actors were feeling SO HARD and acting SO MUCH but because the story wasn't clear, the origin of their emotions also wasn't clear. As a result, it was hard to connect with them as they poured their heart out on stage. Truly an interesting subject, though I feel the direct audience address undercut any character or emotional development and made things awkward. I also felt like it was unsafe to have volunteers on stage during blackouts. There is a reason tech booths warn everyone before they happen.

History is Never Boring

WOW in any dimension

This show fuels anticipation beforehand, then proceeds to layer in foreboding on the spiritual and earthly (sisterly) levels. Wonderful acting, a story that ramps up tension, audience involvement in humor and revelations, and mystical elements to boot! I wish I could give six kitties!

Dark and funny

I am FLOORED!!!!!

Wow. Just wow. Anything directed by Rebecca Wickert is fantastic, but this is really a feat. I found myself laughing so much and scared the next second. Hannah May, the actor who played Leah Fox was a clear stand out for me. Not so often do you see a role played with so much honesty. Her performance was truly captivating. I hope I get to see May in many more performances soon. I’m a fan. Big fan!!! Congratulations to all the sisters and crew on a wonderful and unforgettable performance.
