Fun Show

There was a lot here to like. I attended with a small group and we enjoyed the show. But the performances were a bit uneven and some of the plot points felt a bit like an after school special.

Company: Vee Signorelli
Show: Love Lies a Bleeding
Venue: Strike Theater

Exuberant Production

Didn't quite know what I was getting into with this show. It was a slightly unconventional production of a Shakespherian era play. While I struggled from time to time with the language and may have missed a few plot points (that were later cleared up for me in conversations after the show), there was enough here to keep me enaged and enjoying the show. This was probably one of the best and the most ambitious show I've seen so far, out of about 15 shows. So glad that I was able to attend. You should too. So much blood (in a good way).

Show: The Life Robotic
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Speed of Technology

What a fun and unique opporunity for audience participation. It was a bit hard to submit suggestions while keeping up with the pace of the show, which isn't entirely a problem and didn't discourage me from trying. We were there for the "After Dark" version of the show, which meant that there were a lot of Dildo references. Very strong cast of improvisors.

Company: Kara Millerhagen
Show: Turn Your Suck into Suckcess!
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Huge Suckcess

I came into this show a bit confused about which show I was coming to see. This was not the show I expected, but exactly the show I was looking for! I've seen about 8 shows so far and the character/performance here was among the best I've seen at the Fringe so far this year. Kara is excellent and has a wonderful voice. The music was excellent. The script is well done, a mix of humor/satire and earnestness. The only thing I can think that might make this very good show even better, was a bit more punch on the humor side. There is a bit of audience interaction, but nothing that should worry anyone.

Company: Light Bringer Productions
Show: The Light Bringer
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Wonderful Performance

Laila did a great job promoting the show. After seeing her actively handing out flyers in multiple locations, I was persuaded to add it to my fringe schedule. She is an enthusiatic actor and uses the stage well to tell her story. I'm pleased to hear that she is planning a sequel, because the current show left me with many questions. Some, but not all of which she answered during some brief remarks after the show.

Company: Amy Oppenheimer
Show: Looking for Justice (in all the wrong places)
Venue: Bryant Lake Bowl

Thought Provoking Shades of Grey

I went to see this at 10:00pm on Saturday night and was worried that I would not have the stamina for a serious topic that late in the day. While the delivery was sometimes a bit flat (as someone else has pointed out), the content was gripping. I came for a show that promised to shed some light on the grey areas of the justice system and this show delivered on that promise. As an aging white male, I was absorbed by Amy's story and perspective. I'm frequently frustrated and disheartened by the polarized political rhetoric we deal with every day and it's nice to hear someone acknowledge the grey areas that many of us face in our daily lives. This was a well written and structured show that I will be thinking about for weeks to come.

Company: Martin Dockery
Show: Martin Dockery: TRUTH
Venue: Theatre in the Round

He brought the Lemon Squares

I've seen 3-4 prior shows by Martin Dockery and was thrilled to see him back at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. I'm trying hard not to compare this show to some of his previous shows, which I loved so much and set the bar so high. Martin is a wonderful story teller and hand waver. While this show is not ideally suited for the Theater in The Round venue, Martin managed to make it work without stepping on his phone. As usual, I was both entertained and inspired by his performance, which is very much inspired by our current cultural climate. Please, go see this show so that Martin keeps coming back to Minnesota.

Company: The Project Factory
Show: Pants on Fire
Venue: HUGE Improv Theater

Unscripted Game Show

Some have described this as improv, I'd think about it more as unscripted. It's a game show and I don't think of game shows as improv, just because there is no script. Having said that, I love the TV show that inspired this performance and very much enjoyed the show. It's been said already, but if you are a fan of British Panel Shows, you'll have a good time here.

Company: Alondra Alamilla
Show: The Ghost of Frankenstein's Bride
Venue: Bryant Lake Bowl

Grief, Loss, and Ghosts

I made a last minute decision to see this show and I have no regrets. It wasn't as scary or heavy as I feared. It was a creative look at the extreme places that grief can take us and the power of letting go. It was well written and the performances were strong. Excellent use of props, sounds, and lighting. If you are in the mood for a spooky tale of witchcraft and grief, you will enjoy this show.

Company: Rogues Gallery Arts
Show: Blackout Improv Does Something!!!
Venue: HUGE Improv Theater

Solid show from an experienced cast

Blackout Improv has been around the Twin Cities improv scene for quite a while. I'm pretty sure I saw them once before and was eager to see them again at this years Fringe. I watch a lot of improv shows and love the variety of styles and perspectives that different casts bring to their shows. The show today opened with a short set by a local comic, who later participated lightly as they transitioned into the improv portion of the show. It's a solid strong cast with a unique format and I enjoyed the show a great deal. I highly recommend it.

Company: Black and Foxy Co
Show: Kaleidoscope

Variety Show

This was my first show of the 2024 Fringe, the theme was Coming of Age. It was a very diverse and eclectic mix of performers, each with their own take on the theme of the night. There was dance, spoken word, singing, and story telling. All of the performers were engaging and fun to watch. I'm very interested in the backstory on how this show came to be. How this interesting group of performers came together. This is a very Fringe type show, in all the good ways. I would recommend seeing it just for the song, "A little bit naughty" (did I remember that correctly), but unfortunately/fortunately each show promises to be completely different. If there weren't so many other shows that I really want to see, I'd like to go back and see this group take on a different theme on a different night.
