Martin Dockery: TRUTH

Mostly Just Amusing

I'm a fan but I didn't enjoy this as much as his previous shows. The story about the house dragged on much too long. The stories were mostly just amusing, not rip-roaringly funny. Still, there is a pleasure in just seeing him again after so long an absence from the Fringe.

Tale spinning

Enjoyable. Ever the Martin Dockery fan, I am familiar with the performer and his talent for spinning a tale. The telling and content of this year's stories lacked the nuance and suspense of previous years' masterpieces but his delivery was still as top notch as ever.

FUNNY!

I didn't realize until Martin walked on stage that I'd seen him in the past and he is always fantastic. This show was great and the ending (no spoilers here) was the best! He has a ton of energy, never seems to take a breath for the entire 60 minutes, and weaves a great tale. Definitely see this one!

There is nobody quite like Martin!

We have seen ALL his MN Fringe shows and wouldn't miss this one for anything. If you have seen Martin, there is nothing more to say: madcap, highly energetic, and super clever. Enjoyed all the three stories in TRUTH, though the last one could have gone on for one fewer repetitions (we get it, OK).

The energy, the passion, the humor and the ability to hold the audience's attention throughout the hour was commendable!

Wonderfully layered storytelling

We see Martin’s shows whenever he comes to town! They are always top-notch, a Fringe priority. He takes three ordinary weekend events and spins them into an hour of hilarity, brutally honest insights on human nature, all with the line between truth and fiction blurred.. but where?! Very fun!

A rapid-fire look at the fluid nature of “truth”

Dockery is always engaging to watch, with his breakneck speed of storytelling and his physical style. In this year’s entry he loads us through the slippery slopes of incrementally abdicating principles and values, of declining to speak up, and of falling asleep at the wheel. The arc and conclusion of this show may be less elegant than his prior shows, but he remains an engrossing and unique storyteller.

Best Christmas Story Ever!

Martin's three tales in Truth are not set during Christmas, but he decked the halls and covered them in tinsel with the best Christmas story I've ever heard. He's a riveting comedic storyteller who tells at a manic pace. The only speed bumps are the constant laughs. The tales accumulate and build to a surprise ending that packs a powerful punch. Who says Christmas comes but once a year? Not Maritin.

engaging and clever

dockery is a great storyteller and this should one hundred percent be on your list of shows to attend. it may have played slightly better at any other venue - theatre in the round makes him do a lot of turning around to engage the entire audience. it still worked great and i enjoyed the entire show.

Very talented guy but this didn’t work for me.

What this guy did was incredibly tough…he took the full time telling interwoven stories with incredible energy and poise. I recognize the amazing talent that takes, even if you’ve got a script…he didn’t trip over words or get lost. Amazing. But the back end was definitely a little disappointing in terms of the story content…it got quite repetitious. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t one of the top shows for me based on the content. But I’m impressed at his ability to deliver it.

Martin knows how to captivate his audience with the "truth!" So hilarious and fun and always a pleasure to experience his storytelling work.

Simply One Of The Best

Martin is a MASTER story teller. Let’s start with that. Is this years entry for our fringe worth sitting through? YES! This is a performer who RESPECTS his audience to the point of leaving it all on stage every time he sets foot on one. And the material? Not one word ill chosen. Great, Great, Great.

SO FUNNY!

I've really enjoyed Martin's previous shows, so my expectations were high. He absolutely kills it with his rapid-fire slice-of-life tales of a new dad desperate to get back to normal life after COVID lockdown. Is it all the TRUTH? Hilariously, probably most of it. I, and the rest of the audience, laughed really hard. I almost decked my own halls.

Not much story to tell

Storytelling in the round is difficult, he did OK with this. I think his vibe wasn't for me- it was sort of like a Rush Limbaugh of Fringe. I didn't love the screaming and intensity to an otherwise mundane story about pooping. The thread of his stories also had a people pleasing quality to them that I didn't love- Hating the baby carrier but using it to fit in and appease the gift giver (sure, be kind, yes!), but then it sort of continues throughout all stories- avoiding confrontation for the sake of being liked (cab driver, the MAGA hats, etc). It wasn't until the very end when he explicitly says that he was not pro-Trump that I really knew his stance. The stories were also not...real?

A great truth was told.

True Story ?

Lots of energy by Martin....so much so that I got exhausted and almost fell asleep (830 show; I typically go to bed at 9pm.) But it's the Fringe, so I stayed up late. Lots of laughs, creative "True" story. We're in the same political camp, so I could relate to all the references to the antagonist. Solo shows are difficult for me; 60 minutes is too long.....I get antsy. If you want HIGH energy check out TRUTH.

He brought the Lemon Squares

I've seen 3-4 prior shows by Martin Dockery and was thrilled to see him back at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. I'm trying hard not to compare this show to some of his previous shows, which I loved so much and set the bar so high. Martin is a wonderful story teller and hand waver. While this show is not ideally suited for the Theater in The Round venue, Martin managed to make it work without stepping on his phone. As usual, I was both entertained and inspired by his performance, which is very much inspired by our current cultural climate. Please, go see this show so that Martin keeps coming back to Minnesota.

Just another manic Martin!

This guy has so much energy he makes you tired just listening to him. He is always entertaining, but what struck me is that a show called Truth should be just that. The longer you listen the more you realize that it's just another "shaggy dog story " and the "truth" is being stretched.
