INCREDIBLE

Words can’t express how fun this show is! Everyone had such high energy and the choreography is so awesome. Definitely a must-see!! Just so much fun— ugh I can’t stress it enough. Special shoutout to Bella Maldonado :) killed it.

This is fringe

This is what fringe is for. So creatively told and imaginative, and very happy to see the care taken in telling a clear story. Vibes were immaculate.

Wonderful and UpBeat Fun

A great fresh renewal of Daft Punk. We loved the big dance numbers and the intimate dancing was spectacular! The director retold the Interstella Daft Punk animated film in a wonderfully edited musical theater performance that engaged each of her dancers to the fullest! Well Done Shayla Courteau! Bravo!

Electric!!

My pick as the most must-see show of this festival! The energy was absolutely electric in this non-stop, bordering on perfect dance show. The choreography tied to the emotion experienced and exuded by the dancers will blow you away. The only one I'm planning to see for a second time.

LIFE CHANGING

Seriously one of the best shows I’ve ever seen! Shayla Corteau is a genius choreographer and the cast blows it out of the water. Claire Looker slays the costumes, and the tech is absolutely beautiful. Truly a phenomenal show, and definitely one you should make room for in your fringe schedule.

Daft, But Not Mind-Blowingly So

STELLA-R

Few audience-goers will be familiar with the 2001 anime musical film "Interstella 5555", a companion piece to Daft Punk's 'Discovery' album, but I cannot stress enough how little that should deter you from attending. You! Yes, you! New producer Shayla Courteau is also the choreographer of 50 minutes of non-stop snappy dance pieces that fold into one another, giving the performers and audience no room to relax in their seats. The plot is evident and elegant, the costumes are beautiful, the set is so minimal it might as well not exist, and the talent on stage just oozes into the audience. It might have been the audience feet beating the beat of the music into the risers at the Barker Center for Dance, (home to the UMN's dance program - from which some of the performers hail) but I felt absolutely electric all the way through. I think that a lot of folks in the theater world know the too-rare feeling that occurs when you see a performance that really makes you believe in the beauty of the arts, and Interstella hit that bullseye at a TEN PM OPENING NIGHT. Support young talent and fresh new ideas, and do NOT miss this one.

Step to This!

After taking in a number of plays with heavy content, this was the perfect game changer. A beautiful, graceful, energized troupe that left me recharged and grinning from ear to ear. The sound levels were perfect--loud and rockin' without dipping into the blaring or abrasive--and every dancer was clearly having so much fun. Treat yourself to this dancing playground, especially if you've ever found yourself tapping your toes to Daft Punk.

Oh Wow Wow Wow

If you needed to feel alive this was the show! The nine person cast was literally non-stop. Energy aplenty. The crows was wild and a huge part of the audience gathered in the lobby to greet the cast. Hope to see them in the future!

Musics got me feelin so free/We're gonna celebrate

I saw Hullabaloo and this back-to-back and although the former was more polished and this occasionally had community theater vibes I enjoyed Interstella a little more. Maybe 5555 had the advantage of dancing to one of this century’s best albums and Discovery’s companion anime did most of the narrative work for them, but the cast was clearly having a blast and the 10pm audience was hype for all of it. Discovery is a little too-heavy, with all its best songs at the beginning, but this show gave me more appreciation for those less-spun tracks near the end. (The volume was pretty good for the most part but “One More Time” was WAY too quiet, John in the booth needs to pump that one up!) I really hope this cast returns next year to cover Random Access Memories and hires someone like Sam Landman to perform the Giorgio Moroder monologue.

A MUST SEE!!!

This show was absolutely incredible! Each dancer absolutely killed it and brought so much energy to this piece. The choreography is so fun and incredibly satisfying to watch. Such a beautiful piece with wonderful performers. I had so much fun watching this show and highly recommend seeing it! Shayla, you are a genius!!!

Daft Punk for Life

I will open by saying you do not need any connection or knowledge of the source material to have a good time. It’s a fun dance show telling a story to some bopping music. However, I had an extra good time as someone who was completely fixated on this movie for a time in high school (and thusly Daft Punk’s Discovery as well). It is certainly niche and not something I’d ever remotely expect to see a fringe show of, but once I saw it advertised I thought “well, where else could I see this BUT a fringe festival”. The way it translated to a full dance show was excellent and from an adaptation perspective smartly done. Additionally, the choreography created some really great visual story telling with some strong physical acting from several performers. Definitely worth your time. Thank you Shayla Courteau for making this happen and making my little Daft Punk heart happy.

Delightful

This show deserves to have more budget thrown at it! That being said, it's just about perfect for Fringe. Here's my vote on them doing GORILLAZ next time!

Stunning!

Worth seeing again! Worth seeing period! Every dancer has such a great hold on their characters and the story. I love Daft Punk and they did this show justice for sure. Exceeded my expectations. Seriously rad. A must-see.
