Mae West's The Drag

Not a very engaging piece

It's hard to leave a review like this, but I don't recommend this play. The blocking was fighting the TRP space, the actors were fighting the older text, and the drag interludes were fighting the drama of the scenes. Why were the three queen's songs so disparate? What direction were they given? It was confusing going from Chappelle Roan to a drama set in the 1920s (?). Every performer could've benefited from clearer direction.

A Fantastic Add to Your Fringe Schedule

Criminally empty for such a fun show on a Saturday evening. While the text remains hauntingly relevant in 2024, the care put into this work and obvious love for drag culture shine through, go treat yourself to this lovely performance!

Absolutely Amazing!!

This is a beautiful show! It was fun and showed some modern music along with hitting on serious topics not only relevant in the 1920’s but today as well. It was a captivating performance with all the incredible actors. This was my first fringe show and it definitely isn’t my last!

Lovely homage

Mae West would have loved Chappell Roan and would have been very proud of this show. The pace and energy take a bit to pick up, but once they got the ball rolling the energy is there. I just want more!! The script is wonderfully modernized while honoring the original text, which is brilliant and beyond it's time. I wish Mae and those she loved could see how far we've come, and this cast honors them beautifully.

An hour of authentic Queer Joy not to be missed!

Fantastic show! I was a bit skeptical that a play written by Mae West in the 20's could work today, with modern music, timely themes, and flamboyant drag performances, but I was thrilled to be proven wrong! The script and ensemble cast take themselves and the subject matter just seriously enough. You will laugh with joy, gasp in surprise, cheer with triumph, and above all, you WILL tip the queens (come prepared with cash, but they also take Venmo!). This was seriously the most fun and liberating time I have had at a performance in quite a while. Do not miss Mae West's The Drag!

Challlenging, well-done, and a LOT of fun!

What starts off a little stale and clunky, quickly crescendos into a rollicking and hysterical time! What I personally love about this adaptation is that every character, except the performers, has a very challenging story arc, which is incredibly difficult to achieve in an hour! The cast plays fantastically off one another, and the performances will roust you out of your seat! A thoroughly entertaining show not-to-be-missed!

A fabulous idea for a Fringe production!

Who knew that Mae West wrote this one act? [I didn't]. Such a creative idea to present it as a Fringe play! Rolly was fantastic, and the supporting actors were fine. The queens were "beyond fantastic." I wish the group would have been in a conventional theater, or adapted to the Theater in the Round situation a bit better.

Great cast and great fun!

A wonderful job of casting and great performances by the entire team. A very relatable story which resonates with many of those may still be struggling with their identities and how to become their true selves

Thoroughly enjoyed this show

Really well done show! I love the historical inspiration, I had no idea something like this existed almost 100 years ago. Great acting and musical numbers with very well realized characters. I would definitely go to see a full length production of this show.

Queer History and Joy

So I had to do a little research after the show to figure out just how much was originally from the 20s and how much was adjusted, because it feels very modern and timely while also being rooted in another time. Turns out quite a lot was revised to give the characters a fate that was more happy and less dead, which does track for my expectations of the 1920s, but I am still in awe that there even was a play about drag queens that portrayed gay men in a sympathetic light back then. Overall very compelling and something I would happily watch again!

Smart and entertaining

What a pleasure to get to see a cutting edge play from the 1920s redone in such a self aware ironic way. Really enjoyed it! And great drag too.

Go West, Young Man!

This play has such good messages about being true to yourself and to those who mean the most to you. The modernized and condensed script works perfectly for the Fringe, and is there an award for best costuming? Because this show should get it. Fine, ensemble work--congratulations to the cast!

This Is Where The Party Is!

This show was fast paced and full of high energy. Drag with music and glamour. First rate performers. And outfits to die for! Well acted and performers had a sense of the venue. Suggest you secure tickets soon as likely to sellout as word gets out. Some serious moments too.

Dramady + Drag = WINNING!

This was a FANTASTIC performance by all!!! Campy, funny, this powerful story of finding your truest you was a delight. Love triangles, self-exploration, drag numbers, belly-laughs, and poignant reflections all combine to make a wonderful show. And for any of us who have survived - and thrived - conversion therapy (trigger warning of sorts, as it does involve threads of CT), it's a testament to the strength of the human spirit and being your authentic self! Me describing this show to a friend: "It's like a drag show happens in the middle of Mandy Moore's "SAVED" but set in the 1920s when it was illegal to be queer and you absolutely need to see it!"

Excellent show and humor

The actors were great. The show kept the audience engaged and involved. Interesting plot. Please watch where the clothes in the last act are placed. It partially blocked our view in the last scene. They were good at projecting their voices. The drag Queens were wonderful. The aunt was a fun twist. Highly recommend it

Drag your Butt to This Show

I've seen Drag and I've seen many contemporary, classical and comedic live theater productions. I have never seen the 2 combined. Mae West's The Drag is a fabulous one act play with both. You will think, you will be surprised, you will laugh. Get a front row seat if you can. Hat's off to Playwright Joseph and the entire huge cast. I loved it!
