Howard Lieberman
storytellerNationally known storyteller, poet, performance artist and political activist Howard Lieberman moved from Brooklyn New York to bucolic but shockingly Republican Stillwater MN in 1990. His jaded yet surprisingly tender style has made him a favorite on the national and, thanks to Zoom, global performance scene. Howard is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Fringe Festival and The National Storytelling Network and a current board member of Story Arts of Minnesota.
Loren Niemi
storyteller / producerLoren Niemi is an innovative storyteller creating, coaching/directing, performing, producing, teaching and writing about stories that matter for audiences of all ages in urban and rural settings for over 45 years. He has done 36 Fringe Festivals in eight cities as solo or ensemble storytelling performances since 1996. Howard Lieberman has been his performing partner for 17 of them, proving as Paul Burchill said in the LA Times: “These two are fascinating performers who manage to whip up a theatrical experience from little more than their mouths and imaginations". Loren has participated in over 230 poetry and story slams since 1995 and has won 89 first, second, or third places and 2 grand slams, as well as being a member of the Minnesota 1998 National Poetry Slam team. He is a 2016 recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2020 founded the American School of Storytelling, providing on-line and in-person classes, workshops and performances of the oral arts. Loren is a published author and poet. His work includes Circus Rex - a novel of misadventure, off-beat humor and a happy ending is his newest work and What Haunts Us - a collection of non-traditional “ghost” stories won a 2020 Midwest Book Awards for “Sci-Fi/ Horror /Fantasy / Paranormal” fiction. Other publications include a poetic memoir of his seven years in a Catholic religious order – A Breviary for the Lost, and two poetry chapbooks, Coyote Flies Coach (Sister Black Press) and Vote Coyote! (Austin Nash Studio).
Leslie Polk
storytellerLeslie N. Polk was born and raised in Fort Worth, TX, and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in religious studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York, NY. She uses her academic research interests in Greco- Roman philosophy and the religions of the African Diaspora to inform her work as a writer, performance poet, and film/video artist. In this regard, Leslie would begin to consider her work as part of an emerging genre known as “womanist theopoetics”. As an acclaimed orator and poet, she has filmed choreopoems and performed spoken word/poetry throughout several locations including the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, LA. Her most recent choreopoem, “The Epistle of Her“, has resurfaced as a one-woman show as part of a Student Artist Residency at the Movement Lab of the Milstein Center at Barnard College. It is with great joy and appreciation that she joins the American School of Storytelling to produce this show at the 31st Annual Minnesota Fringe Festival.
Sufian Zhemukhov
storytellerSufian Zhemukhov is an award-winning author and performer featured off-Broadway and nationwide. Sufian's shows “about romance, culture, and one immigrant's story” (NPR) are based on his personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and a college professor, which might be funnier than it sounds. Sufian is a featured teller at the upcoming 2024 National Storytelling Festival. He served as the 2023 Teller in Residence at the International Storytelling Center and received the 2020 JJ Reneaux Emerging Artist Award from the National Storytelling Network. As a scholar, he won the 2019 Best Book Award from the International Studies Association
Christine Mounts
site manager / co-producerChristine Mounts is an IT professional by day and a poet by night. She writes and travels as much as a working schlub like her can manage.
