Best show I've seen all year

I was floored by every element of Eye of Jupiter Theatre's "The Greenhouse." KT Schearer's writing and direction is just as inspired and compelling as her debut, "Ocean on Fire," while still exploring the familiar thread of how we form community amid environmental collapse in new and moving ways. I'm always impressed by her ability to balance humor, strangeness, and profound and original metaphor. All of the performances were outstanding. I could not look away from Alex Thornton and LJ Johnson's dynamic turn as the twins Ant and Squab especially, their comedic timing was beat perfect and always surprising. The production design, choreography, and musical elements worked together really well here too -- in the gorgeous space at the Southern Theatre, you feel transported to the world of this show. I can't wait to see Eye of Jupiter's next production, Schearer and this cast and crew are definitely ones to watch!

Five is not enough kitties

KT Schearer has quickly become one of my favorite playwrights in the Twin Cities. Her previous play, Ocean on Fire, was brilliant. And now, The Greenhouse is no slouch. Very atmospheric, very smart, very well performed. Special nod to David Michaeli who played Ribs with a joyful pseudo-lechery and also performed songs on a violin as commentary to the scenes.

What a perfect venue for this show. I really loved the first few minutes, it was giving Midsommar~, and it put me in a nice little meditative state — so I found myself wishing the rest of the show was like that. Once the dialogue/scenes began it was hard to keep my attention. For me, the powerful aura of the first and last scenes weren’t really matched by the vibes of the more typical play scenes. I also find the tag of “modern dance” a little misleading, there wasn’t really dance.

Creative Concept Missing Fully Fledged Idea

I don't see this as a completed story. I appreciated several of the performances, particularly Ribs and Mother, but otherwise, I think it needs a lot of work. The concept is solid, but execution not as much.

I need the full length piece!

I was so locked in and invested in the world! And some of the LINES are truly echoing in my mind. That said, I think the *Script* needs to go deeper and explore relationship to land, home, and one another. Especially as the world becomes more territorial and people are displaced, it is i important to constantly re-evaluate how the stories of our ancestors journeys/dwellings (or lack of knowledge there) and what we have been told is supposed to be whose "homeland" ALL influence how we move forward. There is really something here and I want it to go deeper. Beautiful, stunning imagery and soundscape. Had a little trouble hearing some of the "kids'" early lines.

This was such a cool piece! Very well written, thought provoking, and entertaining. Poppy’s character was so lovable and funny. The ensemble worked well together and built a world that was an oasis in a post apocalyptic dystopia.

Strange and beautiful show

I was engrossed the entire time in this creepy and hopeful world. Interesting characters, intriguing questions, and beautiful visuals and music!

Impressive and Haunting

Very careful attention was paid to details. Though minimalistic, the set, music, and costumes created a powerfully haunting atmosphere. I especially like the solo violin that assigned short lyrical motifs to different characters and added so much to the overall mystical feel. The theme of helping community in order to help the world came through strongly. I would be curious to know if this is a work in progress since there are many plot points that seem to be left unanswered. What happens with the stolen plants? Why is the community's balance so important? If this show was extended I would definitely be interested in the full version!

Everything about this was fantastic!! The live music, choreography, acting, direction, everything!

Perfectly done sci-fi drama

There is so much story and character packed into this one-act, each character felt distinct and real without leaning on out-of-place exposition. I was left wanting to know more about this world and its history, but this is a fantastic slice of a future dystopia. The main conflict felt somewhat contrived, but the overall plot was interesting and enjoyable.

Love this show!

I was enthralled from the moment I walked in the theater, this is a must-see show! Such an intriguing concept, and the blend of comedy with such intense/cultic/creepy vibes was *chefs kiss*

Such a calming show wow 🧘‍♀️

The Greenhouse was a phenomenal example of a well established world made clear by some stellar acting. I was in love with the costumes, story, music, and general vibes. ❤️ Such a lovely, comforting show in a perfect venue for it! 10 greenhouses out of ten.

Compelling, beautiful, funny and weird!

ABSOLUTELY LOVED the show!!!! From the first scene to the last, it was beautiful to look at, spectacular use of music, clever and so funny! Any & squab were hilarious and delightful! Powerful and interesting message about community + the world! Do yourself a favor and go see it!! Brava!

Life, Death, Renewal

Life and death are part of the same cycle of existence. That what I got from this show. Cast had strong audience support at the show I was at. Creative use of set and an ability to command the space was displayed by cast.

Definitely worth the watch!

LOVED this show! Thought provoking and deep that will make you ponder life, death, and your place in impacting change in the world. I was very pleased with many choices made but their musical choices stood out the most to me, minimalistic but very effective violin and vocal motifs added so much to the story. Each actor embraced their character fully, "poppy" was particularly great. I left deep in thought and wanting to see more of what this group of artists has to say!

Really enjoyable, weird, show

Really enjoyed this creepy piece of dramatic theatre. It was easy to imagine what this show would be like with a fully realized set, but the Southern Theatre also served as a great backdrop for a show about life, death, growth, and decay. The script was well written (I especially enjoyed the dialogue involving the two youngest characters) and the performances were overall strong. I really liked the use of diegetic music in scene changes - in a longer version of the show I'd love to see that element expanded. Definitely a show to add to your short list!

A whole new world!

KT Schearer and the cast of “The Greenhouse” brought us into a whole new world with weird (and funny) cultists, mystical plants, and an unknown world outside the Greenhouse. Very impressive!

Brava! Very intriguing

This show grabs your attention from the beginning. The live musical elements that begin at the top and are scattered throughout the show are incredible. To add, I felt dissatisfied by the ending, I was hoping for more. Great performance!

Enthralling and Enchanting!

An inside look at a fascinating world taking place in a greenhouse filled with kind and funny cultists. The violin is phenomenal and the opening and ending sequences are some of my favorite I've seen in theatre.
