As creative as ever
I see this troupe every time they are in the Fringe and they never disappoint. They are so creative and versatile and talented. They don't need a bigger stage, but they definitely need a bigger venue so that more people can get in to see them. They are wonderful!
Company: American School of Storytelling
Show: More Better Stories
Venue: American School of Storytelling
Leslie Polk is a Gem
Leslie Polk's storytelling is a gem. She speaks intertwined stories of three different women, and covers issues of importance to all of us: the history of slavery and Jim Crow, the church, and the stories we tell. Her physicality and her prose are wonderful. We are lucky that she has made her way from Texas to NY to Minneapolis for this Fringe. I hope we see much more of her.
Company: Majhuwa Bagar Jana Kala Manch
Show: Tragedy of Maila Kami
Venue: Theatre in the Round
I really wanted to like this show ...
... but it was a bit difficult. Most of the dialog is not in English and so it was hard to discern the story. I'm thinking that there was much there that the audience missed because of this. The little English could not have been a translation of the Nepalese because there wasn't enough of it. The subject matter is important, and I wished that it had been done in a way that was more accessible to us. The show is about 40 minutes long, and it ended in such a way that none of us could tell if it was over or not (the actor had left the stage minutes before any of us did, with no indication that it was the end). Perhaps we were meant to contemplate the subject, but again, there was too little there to contemplate much. The concept was a good one.
Company: Martin Dockery
Show: Martin Dockery: TRUTH
Venue: Theatre in the Round
FUNNY!
I didn't realize until Martin walked on stage that I'd seen him in the past and he is always fantastic. This show was great and the ending (no spoilers here) was the best! He has a ton of energy, never seems to take a breath for the entire 60 minutes, and weaves a great tale. Definitely see this one!
Company: RGK Dance Academy
Show: Pursuit of Happiness
Venue: The Southern Theater
Impressive costume changes
The dances are always fun to watch and the music had me tapping my feet at my seat, but the story line was not strong and the acting weaker. This show would have been best without any of the story and just the dancing. We've seen Bollywood groups at the Fringe in past years and they were far more energetic and delightful to watch. This one left me wanting. Maybe more rehearsal time?
Company: Tennessee Playwrights Studio
Show: That Woman - The Monologue Show
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre
Great peak into the lives of women we should know
We all know that JFK had affairs, but I certainly didn't know anything about any of them, and no name other than Marilyn Monroe's (this play doesn't include her). Love the concept and it was very well delivered. Six talented women. This show is definitely worth adding to your list.
Company: Paul Thomas
Show: Intimate and Appropriate
Venue: Bryant Lake Bowl
Well done!
This show was really clever and very well executed. Don't let the photo on the posting fool you; this isn't a guy in drag. But this is a guy who plays a number of different guys, all white men, many of whom would be filling in the bubble for Trump this fall if they were real, some of whom are dumb and others who don't get it and some who just haven't really caught up to 2024 yet. Fast paced so that he could get a lot of characters into his 60 minutes, and funny throughout.
Company: Tristan Miller
Show: Least Likely To Succeed: Tales From A Midwestern Homeschooler
Venue: Bryant Lake Bowl
Disappointed
Tristan says he was homeschooled, but that was about as far as that theme went. This was not storytelling; it was stand up and needed a lot of work. Seemed like he threw it together this week and hadn't even tried to practice it; he admitted as much numerous times when he lost his train of thought and apologized for checking his notes. His jokes really didn't land well, though a few people chuckled, but mostly it was disappointing because the title itself could have lent itself to some great material in the genres of comedy and storytelling and neither happened.
