Good conceit, great execution
Maybe I'm biased as a 'co-writer' (quite a few of my texts got in ;) ) but I thought this show was brilliant. Tons of improv talent plus the thrill of getting a message in the show had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. you're the only den i see
Company: Denzel Belin Presents

No thanks
I saw the 4th show and was disappointed. The comedians were fine, but I wasn't impressed with the improv. The Taylor Swift bit got old fast, and the 'messages from Denzel' were just plain awkward. Maybe if I was already familiar with these performers I would've enjoyed it more, but as an outsider I can't recommend it.
Company: Deft Pictures
Show: Secrets Under the Christmas Tree: A Deedee Wallaby Mystery
Venue: Open Eye Theatre
Solid bones, but didn't stand out
The mystery itself is so-so -- a strong premise, but the 'parlour scene' relied on some character details the audience wasn't aware of, or details that could've easily been missed. The comedy didn't really do it for me, either, and overall it just felt sort of bland

Show: PARTS
Venue: The Southern Theater
Strong performer, mediocre show
In my opinion, this was a series of disconnected skits, some better than others. The performer is clearly very talented, and not afraid to get right in the audience's face. Some bits went on far too long (the 'choreography' section especially), while others I loved (the opening slideshow!!). Overall I think it could've used more cohesion and fewer transitions, though I did like the choice of music
Company: Linnea Bond
Show: Heart Ripped Out Twice And So Can You!
Venue: Barbara Barker Center for Dance
Horrific, but also very funny!
Reincarnation-as-timeshare is a truly great conceit for a solo show. The contrast between her aggressively cheery demeanor and the horrors she reenacts kept me thoroughly engaged. Energy kinda dipped near the end when things veered from the personal into more general, global woes.
Company: Eye of Jupiter Theatre
Show: The Greenhouse
Venue: The Southern Theater
Perfectly done sci-fi drama
There is so much story and character packed into this one-act, each character felt distinct and real without leaning on out-of-place exposition. I was left wanting to know more about this world and its history, but this is a fantastic slice of a future dystopia. The main conflict felt somewhat contrived, but the overall plot was interesting and enjoyable.
Company: Greta Mae Geiser
Show: Antistrophe to an Andro-Sapphic Tragedy
Venue: Barbara Barker Center for Dance
Intruiging and powerful
I definitely need to look more into the 'Neo-Greek' genre. This play is superbly written, and a gorgeous performance. Evokes the massive, tragic emotional landscape of classic Greek storytelling while still feeling wholly modern and original. Some parts had me confused, so some initial context might've been helpful, but an incredible show regardless
Company: Vulva Va-Voom & Company
Show: TransMasculine Cabaret, Starring Vulva Va-Voom

Wow!!!
Don't believe them--this is NOT just another sad solo show! It's not always easy for a solo show to balance being both naval-gazy and self-aware but I think this show nails it. Extremely personal and relatable (being nonbinary and feeling 'half-trans'...ooof..) without feeling overly depressing. This show is definite proof that you CAN tell good jokes about transness without being transphobic (I'm definitely stealing the forrest gump one...).
Company: The World Crime League
Show: We Were Only Henchmen

Great concept, plot needs work
First half of the show was a fantastic setup. Actors did a great job, and I really liked the relatable yet outlandish critique of 'henching'. Second half lost its shock value very quickly (although again, great acting, Lenny was a disturbingly believable performance), and the ending wasn't quite satisfying.
Company: Sarah McCabe
Show: Last Pitch Effort
Venue: HUGE Improv Theater
Sweet and funny
Barb stole the show, in my opinion, while the other characters had little quirks that could be expanded upon. Also would've liked to see more interaction between characters
Company: Alex Stokes / Sky Blue Productions
Show: Hugo and Maeve Join A Cult!
Venue: Bryant Lake Bowl
Fantasic chemistry!
The show starts off running, and keeps that energy throughout with near-constant quips and bits, wasn't bored for a second. Great conceit of watching a livestream to get all the exposition in a way that feels natural, plus the comments of people 'watching' the stream were so funny
Company: Jackdonkey Productions
Show: The Dumb Waiter

Get away! Incredible!
Love a show that makes me laugh just from the actors' facial expressions and pointed ennunciations. Recommend sitting in the front row so you can receive the full experience! Great use of the trapdoor. Ending left me scratching my head a bit, but in a 'still thinking and talking about it' way

All the warm fuzzies
SUCH an engaging, animated, charismatic storyteller! Touching and hilarious. Definitely going to read his book after this
Company: OcTeapus Productions
Show: The MacScottish Play
Venue: Phoenix Theater
Fun, if clunky
The plot is sort of scattershot--loved the medieval Scotland parts, the cliche crush-getting-revealed parts less so. Some jokes hit hard, others felt a bit forced. Certain physical comedy bits had me floored, I'm still awed by that perfect spin...
Company: an alleged Theatre Company
Show: A First-Class Comedic Revue… Featuring the Reanimated Corpse of a Wright Brother

Another (alleged) great show!
I've become a huge fan of this theater company, and this show does not disappoint! The 'brothers' skit had me laughing line after line
Company: Wet Splat Productions
Show: One Tree HELL

Another stunning experience
I had high hopes for this, coming from "20,000 Leagues" last year, and certainly wasn't disappointed! The ensemble's spontaneity and flexibility is off the charts, never felt like it was dragging or muddled. They're very funny and play off each other well

Sorry this review is mean, I promised i liked it
As an experimental, interactive art piece? Loved it. Loved the scattershot of mediums. Incredible talent on display. --disclaimer: I only get mean about things I like and care about. I did REALLY LIKE this.-- The messaging felt preachy and belittling, while the messages themselves were pretty standard and unchallenging. Nothing wrong with a simple message, but I just don't understand how enjoying nature and singing and being unpopular in grade school make one a 'freak'. And personally, where feminism is concerned, while Medusa is cool (and I loved the music and choreography!), Hillary Clinton is not the kind of 'feminist icon' I would display alongside her. Lastly, the sheer hypocrisy of having this show that is about, written by, and starring oneself, with an entire cast of artists backing you up...and ending it with "lay down your ego and love" was so tone deaf it felt profound. Again, artistically it was very inspiring, and I truly did enjoy the experience. I just couldn't take it seriously whatsoever.

Touching performance
Very fun show, love this style of gentle but intimate audience participation. Great, if unorthodox, choice of 'theater', plus a craft, not to mention the phenomenal storytelling. A+ (the A stands for Amen) -the saint of lawnmowers
